i wasn't taking a pop at anyone in particular - certainly not harry,
who I see as level-headed, even-tempered, and a valued member of the
packet fraternity. the main protagonist is a ranting italian station.

anyone who's been on packet for any length of time will know that i'd
never be elected as president of ian's fan club. nevertheless, i thought
it was time that the sniping should be balanced with a few comments about
ian's three decades worth of efforts in the hobby, his career as a radio
officer, his proficiency at cw, and to make the point that he's not as
daft as people make him out to be.

whether or not people think he's on the right tack is a different matter.
the fact is that he's pursued the issues that he thinks are important in
the hobby with an evangelical zeal, often in the face of stiff opposition
which would have daunted a lesser person.

he's learnt from experience that if he hangs on in there, eventually, if
he has a sound case, he'll win the day. the ra and rsgb are much more open
and receptive these days than in the past. were it not for ian's efforts
to make them more accountable and more in tune with those they serve,
things might have continued in the same old way.

he criticised rsgb when he felt it necessary, he's now praising them
for their u-turn on several issues, and their change of heart.

without the hassles of Ian and his ilk, would the ra:

1) be going out of its way to hold forums up and down the country?
2) attending the major rallies?
3) have provided a mobile radio shack gb3fun to promote the hobby?
4) along with rsgb, developed and introduced the new licence structure?
5) pegged the licence fee at 15gbp for the last twenty years?

would the rsgb have introduced a club-based representation with each
club having local club rep able to keep in touch with regional managers?
(unpaid volunteers).

i somehow doubt it.

as to ian's use of lower case, i'd much rather see that than people
SHOUTING IN UPPER CASE. even so, upper case may stem from them being
visually impaired, so we mustn't rush to judgement.

it could be argued that if we all agreed to use lower case, it would speed
up communication, and wouldn't detract from message content. i'm not
putting that forward as a suggestion, but this bulletin in lower case is
just as readable as if i'd capitalised it as normal. as i said earlier,
packet messages aren't works of art - just ephemera to be read, (if read
at all), then binned as yesterday's news.

not job applications, not cv's, not legal contracts, not works of art, not
business correspondence, not university dissertations, not homework, just
speedy messages between hobbyists. no-one should be discouraged or hassled
for their poor command of english on packet. the emphasis should be on the
content - not the style. many who have much to offer have been deterred
from contributing, which is packet's loss, not theirs.

if anyone on packet is so concerned about correct use of english rather
than the intrinsic value of the message content, then why not qsy to
one of the english language newsgroups? eg:

alt.english.usage
alt.usage.english

anyone who just wants to have a moan - be it about the government, your
bank, or any organisation that deserves a bit of flak, then go to:

www.grumbletext.co.uk

no bad language - just a lot of grumbling upset people. should be like
being in heaven for some packeteers:-)

exactly so. it's evident that irlp is on the increase, providing enormous
pleasure all around the world, and appears to be stimulating activity
levels. on here, it's just become one more thing to fall out about,
which is hardly a success story for packet.
