Packet News No.97 Compiled By RON GU4XGG/GP4IPA Dated.29/11/1996
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now this is the good news the telephone to the outside world is still
working.
Now the bad news this week.
Flights at the Airport not operating due to strong winds.
Most days no cross channel ferry as the wave height too great; we now only
have a fast wave piecing ferry, so Max.operating height eight feet.
Then today the Post Office staff go on strike so no mail. That means our
"Snail Mail" link to Plymouth now gone as well.
I think somebody up there is indicating that it is surfing the internet or
nothing, but this is the time of the year when ships in The Channel put
down their anchors and cut our cable link. And we DO NOT have a satilite
link.Am I glad I have three HF rigs as if the winter goes on like this we
will be in demand.
If you want me Fax.or Phone that is of course !!!!!!!!!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brian G4FRG has now changed his home BBS to GB7TJZ
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Had a Telephone call from Ben in Denmark this evening to tell me that all
the BBS Sysops in his country have gone on strike. He now has to use "E"
Mail to another country in order to get his Packet messages.
His "E" Mail address is :- BEN IPARC @ POST3.TELE.DK (I could have missed
out a few things such as dots or cross hatch as the room was in darkness
when I picked up the phone and I wrote by feel)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are still having problems in getting "P" Bulls into GU as they are not
reaching Plymouth to go on the Floppy run.
We are also looking into using "E" Mail to connect Plymouth and Guernsey
as we have now come to the conclusion that without North Hessary Tor the
Radio Link of 120 mls UHF will not work in Winter.
We hope this weekend to have the incoming Private Mail problem
resolved. And then I hope to hear from you all.
At this QTH I am dropping hints that it would be a good thing if I were
connected to the Internet. So far the question of how much it will cost
(œ150 per annum) has not been asked. We slipped the second phone line in a
few months ago.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 80 Mtr. net went quite well last week with eight stations up, and
conditions quite good for Winter. Please look for us, but basically we will
take over the RAFAs freq. or if GARY F5VDM comes up early one that he has
"bagged", but it is not easy in Winter to get on or near 3.762.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jim GU0ELF has returned after his successfull operation in the USA but has
to take things easy for a few months.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have installed Winpack V6.1 this end and it seems to be going very
well. Also have sent off my œ10 as I think this and previous programmes
were and are excellent.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I looked on the PC this morning 2nd.Dec 1996 to be greeted with 28 "P"
Bulls.I answered them all but a little on the brief side.So thanks to all
for keeping in touch despite our recent problems.
As it now seems that we will not get the use of NHT for our radio link to
UK this Winter we will have to rely on a "Floppy" link to UK and at a
later date an "E" Mail link. Not "Proper" radio we know but short of a
satellite we have no option.
So here follows your contributions to me.Thanks chaps.

Hi Ron,
Thanks for the news, gratefully received as ever.
I managed to drop into the net on Sunday evening, put a G5RV up here
last week and it is doing a good job.
Unfortunately the propergation was such that the UK stations were not
hearing each other, fortunately the Chairman managed to keep it going,
quite enjoyable even though I wasn't on for long. Will tune in again
this Sunday, hope to be able to say hello.
Cheers for now... Mike.

Well,
It's all pretty quiet for me, too, so I really can't help you out with any
news except to say I'm running a TCP/NTS gateway on 144.675 NTS. Busy at
work with Data Audit at HQ as the force starts the move to Windows NT
(sorry
for swearing in public for some). Anyone close enough with TCP, there are
several locals here running Web Pages (including me on both 44.131.244.218
all the time and 44.131.244.219 sys2.g8lsn.ampr.org sometimes).
I hope averyone gets to have a peaceful Christmas.

Hello Ron, I have seen on the IPARC News that everything is OK with You.
Last Sunday, I have tried the new Net at 16.00 UK time, but the QRM and
the noise where to strong. I only heard one IPA member but VY weak.
Maybe more luck in the coming weeks HI HI.
I will let You know how things are going.

Hi, Ron, and all readers. Thanks for the IPA msg and I see that there are
still problems with the cross-channel link. Dorset Police Amateur Radio
Society now have a new node on Eggardon Hill, South West Dorset, IO80QR.
It is dual-port on 144.675 and 433.650MHz, the call sign being ASKERS
(name of the area) The aerial is a WX1 half way up the job's mast and has
exellent coverage.
Looking from the Channel Islands, it would be just West of GB3SD
(Weymouth) on 70cms and just East of GB3TR (Torbay) on 2m. Hope this
could be of some use to you and anyone else. (It has only been running
since 16 Nov 96). Very best

Hi Ron - Very pleased to receive the packet news from you, yet again - you
are absolutely correct in your personal remarks about our apathy. I'm
afraid Ron that you are one of those people who has seen in advance the
inevitable, in this day and age. As you know, I am usually more active on
the band I do listen whenever I am home, but the noise on the frequency at
this time of year is "painful". I want you to know that I am very glad to
receive the newsletter and enjoy the fruits of your labour. May I say that
I am a member of the I.P.A. primarily for our Radio Club, not the other
way around. So Ron - Please take heart that you efforts are well received
and do not go unrecognised. You don't just need time, Ron, to do what you
do. You need dedication, which is appreaciated and TALENT. I hope this
comment will encourage you to keep staggering towards the finish line and
until you are replaced by someone of equal ability and that he is chosen
with care! Please don't decide to join the SILENT majority!!

Hi Ron, Big trouble here the mobile R.F. bermuda triangle came down around
the house for almost a month, so have been out of touch. When it lifted I
saw mail coming but the gremlins stole them from the mailbox, (we are
looking for gremlins with odd socks, patch leads and those other useful
bits that go missing??
Perhaps in the next newsletter you could ask people to resend mail if I
have not replied.
Cheers de Nige (Always happy to oblige Ron GU4XGG)

I know that the Festive season seems a long way off,but as I never buy any
presents or send cards and hang up decorations,it does not matter too much
at this QTH.
But Packet is slow from This Island these days so I will take the
opportunity of wishing All IPARC Members and their Families A Very Happy
Christmas and a Peacefull and Prosperous New Year and May Good Health
follow you all of your life.
