INFORMATION ABOUT ELEPHANT'S ROCK ISLAND
----------------------------------------
Elephant's Rock is located up the West Coast about 25 km West of Vredendal,
and 4 miles North of the Olifants River Mouth (Elephant's River) which is
about 450 km North of Cape Town. The island is about 100 to 150 metres
long and about 50 to 75 metres wide, with the highest point about 50 ft
above sea level. It lies 250 metres off shore. It used to be called
Morrel's Rock many years ago and is also known as Robeiland (Seal Island)
by the local inhabitants and is located near De Punt Mine. They suck up
alluvial diamonds with large boats operating out of the river mouth.

The co-ordinates are 31 deg 36 min S and 18 deg 11 min E.

It is a Nature Reserve, and ZS1FJ has obtained the necessary permit. It has
plenty of seals and bird's nests and is a very malodorous environment.
Your nose gets used to it within 10 minutes ! They say the sea never breaks
over the highest point which is 70 feet above sea level on the prevailing
weather side of the island (West side). Planned "shacks" will be on the
East side.
