FAREWELL DXNS
The last copy of the RSGB's DX News Sheet has now been issued - the end of
an era. The link between IOTA and DXNS had continued for 35 years from the
time of the programme's creation by Geoff Watts in late 1964. Throughout this
period it was the 'voice' of IOTA. As the last copy issues, I should like to
pay tribute to all the very capable editors of DXNS over the years and not
least to the last two with whom I had a lot of personal contact during IOTA's
period of development and growth, Brendan McCartney, G4DYO and Chris Page,
G4BUE. I found them always supportive of IOTA and very patient with my
requests for space and last minute panic alterations! As any editor knows,
this is not always easy! Many thanks, Chris, for all your efforts on our
behalf during your period of stewardship over the last four years. Like you I
shall miss our Monday evening QSOs.

>>> THE ISLAND RADIO EXPEDITION FOUNDATION AND IOTA <<<
On 9 June 1999 an announcement was made about the formation of a new funding
body, the Island Radio Expedition Foundation, Inc. (see www.sat.net/~iref)
with the primary function to raise money in support of expeditions to rare or
new IOTA groups. The RSGB IOTA Committee has written as below to Mike
Crownover, AD5A, President of IREF welcoming this initiative.
Dear Mike
It was with great pleasure that we read your press release about the
formation of Island Radio Expedition Foundation, Inc. The IOTA Committee
welcomes this development whole-heartedly and congratulates you and your
colleagues on the initiative and effort which you have devoted to bringing it
to fruition.
That a funding body for IOTA operations is urgently required is
self-evident. More than ever before, IOTA enthusiasts are looking to activate
the more remote islands which even in these days of world tourism are seldom
visited by non-locals. The cost of transportation and total life support can
be prohibitive, particularly if, as the IOTA Programme becomes more popular,
longer and better equipped operations become increasingly justified.
We welcome your decision to make IREF an international organisation
with a Board of Directors drawn from both within and outside the United
States. This will have broad appeal to potential members and benefactors.
The IOTA Committee thanks you for your support of the IOTA Programme
and wishes the IREF all success. We recommend it to the IOTA Community
whole-heartedly.
Best regards
Martin Atherton, G3ZAY Roger Balister, G3KMA
