ZS26BI : BIRD ISLAND IOTA DX-PEDITION : 9 TO 13 MARCH 1998
----------------------------------------------------------
The team consisting of ZS1FJ Barry, ZS2U Al, ZS6ALJ Hans, ZS2LL Lambert and
ZS1B Bud assemble in Port Elizabeth this afternoon 8th March and fly out
to the island after 08h00 UTC tomorrow morning. We hope to have the 15
meter rig running by 13h00 UTC on 21.260 mhz, so look out for us !! We
have a 3 el tribander with a linear amplifier with the sea all around us,
so should be heard fairly easily depending on propagation.
We are activating a new island / island group for the IOTA Award and will
also be on CW in the bottom 10 khz of each band at different times,
depending on propagation.
We will be giving 160 meters a go between 02h30 to 0500 UTC and will scan
the whole band between 1810 and 1850 khz.
6 meters will be activated using 10 watts and a 3 el yagi. Look for us on
50.150 SSB and 50.450 FM mainly, though we will also scan 50.110 and 50.200
fairly often.
For the locals we will have 2 meter FM through the Eastern Cape repeater
system and simplex on 145.500 mhz, as well as LSB on 7060 khz and 3760 khz
in the evenings (SAST)
Apart from the triband and 6 meter yagis, we will have inverted Vee dipoles
suspended from the top of a lighthouse tower with the apex at 100 ft . We
hope this will give us a readable signal outside Africa on 160, 80, and 40
meters. On these bands we will also be using a linear amp.
In the early mornings (SAST) we will be looking for North America on 40 meters
and will transmit on 7074 or 7098 khz and listen around 7174 khz.
QSLs should be sent direct to ZS1FJ........OK in all call books.
