I have tried to match a survey of a road in South East Missouri
to modern topographic maps. It doesn't fit. The survey was done
by chain and compass about 1840. The east 2/3 of the route
(between Fredericktown and Arcadia, Missouri) fits well, but the
western part bends and puts the trail up over the steepest of
mountain sides (or what pass for mountains in that part of
Missouri), tracks that would not have been passable to horse or
wagon. The problem is that those mountains are magnetic iron ore
and that confused their compass.

I'd like to find early topographic maps to find old roads and
buildings that are no longer the same places but few libraries
keep such history.
