There are abandoned pits of all sizes and shapes around Coolgardie and
Kalgoorlie. Miners would just dig a shaft to 12 feet or so and finding no
gold just abandon it. Most have never been filled in.
Not too many years ago a fossicker found a large nugget just by scratching
around in the dirt. Whenever that happens they all get out there in hordes
scratching around looking for another. Metal detectors had a good sale
here.Not sure what they use now.
