Hi Ray and all,
With regards to pilots using man made features (landmarks) as
navigational aids you reminded me of an incident in Newark NJ some years
ago. The famous Flying Eagle sign atop the Anheuser Busch brewery was
taken down due to age and maintainence costs which raised such an uproar
from the pilots it was completely refurbished and put up again. Pilots
landing at Newark International have been using it to locate the airport
under VFR conditions for more than 60 years, especially at night it can
be seen for miles and miles while the rotating beacon atop hangar 14 hugs
the ground.
One other thing, the New Jersey Turnpike is in perfect alignment with
runway 4R which makes following the "conga line" easy. Take a look at
Google and try to find the runway without it, I guarantee you'll get lost
in that vast complex that dwarfs both runways while at most other
airports the runways are the dominant feature.
