Food Dye Products Continue To Rise

The number of foods affected by the Sudan 1 dye has risen to 474.

The Food Standards Agency has released a fresh list of 146 items which
include the potentially carcinogenic dye. However, the agency added that
there were a number of duplications in the previously issued list.

Taking these out and adding in the new items lifts the total of 474 and
not 575, even though the official lists go down as far as 575.

Meanwhile, the agency said that the vast majority of affected products had
been removed from the shelves of supermarkets and smaller shops.

David Statham, Director of Enforcement at the Food Standards Agency, said:
"This has been an enormous undertaking. Hundreds of products have been
affected in thousands of shops.

"The vast majority of contaminated foods has now been removed and that
provides some reassurance to consumers.

"However, there may be some products remaining both in shops and in the
catering sector and we will continue to work with local authorities to
remove them as far as is practical and achievable.

"The risk to health is very small, and it is sensible not to eat these
foods, but there can be no doubt that consumers should not have been
exposed to these contaminated products."

The contamination scare started last Friday when it was revealed that a
contaminated batch of chilli powder had been used as an ingredient in a
batch of Worcester sauce.

The sauce was then used as an ingredient in a wide range of products,
leading to the wide scale of recalls.

It is illegal to put the Sudan 1 colouring into food.
