Perhaps of limited interest, but I thought people might like to know of a
new website that's the culmination of five years intensive effort, at the
height of which 1,000 people worked round the clock to transfer data from
more than 3 million handwritten forms onto a database.

The database at the "Hall of Names" located at Yad Vashem, on Mount
Remembrance in Jerusalem will now be available online to researchers
at the click on a mouse.

It contains the names of victims of the holocaust, their ages, place of
birth, occupations and where they were murdered by the Nazis. The
organisation who undertook the work are appealing to Jewish families
around the world to check the database and submit and unrecorded names via
the site.

With the generation of survivors dwindling, it is hoped that by putting
the names on internet it will provide one final push for people to update
the records. A spokesman said "We know for sure that many people have
never spoken, whether for psychological or other reasons. Now, either way,
they or their relatives and friends will find it much easier to send in
missing details.

The task at Yad Vashem began in the 1950s shortly after Yad Vashem was
established to the memory of six million Jews murdered by the Nazis and
their collaborators.

By 1999 2 million names had been recorded, and in that year the project
was given a boost by the Volker Commission established to track down the
victims' assets in Swiss bank accounts after a scandal of dormant accounts
of Jewish victims.

In that year alone, an additional 400,000 names were added and over the
next few months it's hoped to add another half million. Avnar Sharev the
director of the project said: "This is a race against time. Remember that
their are no tombstones - the Nazis set out to obliterate the entire
Jewish race - even the memory of them".

The website can be found at:

www.yadvashem.org

I hope this is of interest to someone out there.
