Hello Dick and Tesla Coil enthusiasts,
This has turned into such a lively and informative discussion I am truely 
amazed! I haven't seen the like in years.
Being unfamiliar with the mains frequency in Oz but recognizing the basic 
British system I can venture a guess it is 50~. This leads to another 
fairly educated guess that you should have no problem using American 
equipment designed for a 230V (nominal) 60~ supply. The mains voltage 
tolerance is + - 6% and everything is designed to comply. This MAY 
compensate in MOST instances BUT because a 60~ bit such as a motor will 
draw about the same amount MORE on a 50~ supply you may barely break even 
and overheating may be a problem. The slight increas in transformer Ix 
shouldn't be a problem however. Considering basic VAR, your gear should 
work just fine here as does European equipment.
You mentioned "Tesla's motors" obviously referring to the standard 
induction motor, so I have a question I would LOVE to see you guys answer 
just for fun. Put your brains to work, this could get VERY interesting.
I can give you the US standard based on 60~ only because it's easier for 
me to work with from memory. The exact figures are fairly unimportant and 
supplied for reference only.
The rotational speed of an alternator shaft is held constant at 2400 RPM 
to provide a highly regulated 60~ phase contant output so that 
alternators can be ganged for more output and all equipment in the system 
from alternator to motor will work properly.
The rotational speed of an induction motor shaft is 1700 RPM standard.
OK, why then does the alternator shaft turn at 2400 RPM while the motor 
it drives turns at 1700 RPM instead of 2400? Shouldn't they turn at the 
same speed? Since the motor spins SLOWER than the alternator, someone 
tell us WHY.
That should give you something to chew on for a while. Like I said, the 
numbers are there only for reference, just tell us why the motor turns 
slower in SIMPLE terms please, for the benifit of those who don't read 
Greek. BTW, don't you SVs feel proud your alphabet is the language of 
electrical engineers?
