Hi Guys
The Earth Leakage detectors used in Australia are indeed 30mA for whole of
house installations. I believe it is set at 30mA to minimise false
tripping etc and loosing customer confidence. There is always some leakage
in the wiring and in particular appliance wiring especially the heater
wires fitted in refrigerators. Washing machines and dish washers are also
on the list of offending machines.
By law if any alterations are made to existing switchboards an ECLB must
be fitted. Try explaining to a customer that they have to replace their
fridge just because you fitted a new circuit to the board.
All circuits in hospitals and some other areas are 10mA ECLB. We fit one
per feed using a combined ECLB and circuit breaker.
