I noticed an ad in a UK magazine - "Practical Electronics" which might
interest constructors. The only "high street" supplier of electronic bits
and bobs, which doesn't cater well for much of the stuff that radio
amateurs need, is Maplin electronics.
However, a firm which will be known to VK's has just expanded into the UK
market, which could look promising. the firm is called JAYCAR Electronics.
The only firm I've seen reference to is Oz on packet is Dick Smith, but
JAYCAR's ad claims that they are the dominant supplier in Oz. Their ad
says:
"The hobby electronics market in Australia has historically been very
strong with large numbers of enthusiasts served by dynamic magazines and
vigorous commercial suppliers". Hmmm, I take that with a pinch of salt, in
terms of the state of play in 2004, but in fairness, it does say
"historically".
Anyway, JAYCAR are offering UK enthusiasts a free 424 page catalogue
listing more than 6,000 products.
They've been trading on internet for 10 years, and their website has over
3,500 product datasheets and application notes available to download
online.
Their UK catalogue is priced in pound sterling, and they offer secure
online ordering. (I wonder what the UK Value Added Tax situation is!!?).
They stock:
Kits
Robotic components
Electronic components
Gadgets
Security, surveillance, lighting, computing and telecom items.
You can get order free catalogue or search their database by product
category or keyword at:

Disclaimer:
For any "packet policemen" or "band bobbies" out there in packetland,
this message does not constitute and "advert" as it is not written on
behalf of, or for the benefit or information of a commercial organisation
(IE JAYCAR), with whom I have no connection or pecuniary interest.
It's written for the benefit and information of fellow amateurs, which is
quite in order.
It shouldn't be necessary to say this, but so many times on here people
hold forth about regulations that they've neither read nor understood,
and base their comments about rules and regs on folklore not fact.
Anyway, I wonder if any of our antipodean chums have any experience
of JAYCAR and their services? Is it true that you are well-served by
an array of electronic mags or is VK going the same way as in the UK?
