Hello everyone,
I keep seeing posts regarding unwanted mail and phone calls that
repeatedly go unheeded or worse, refuted. Can't you guys get together on
how to reduce or eliminate e-mail spam or are you really so thick you
can't realize that NOTHING is truely effective?
There are two ways to reduce it but like I said (in so many words)
they're a lot smarter than you. First, when posting your e-mail address
to a web site, always use a "throwaway" address like Juno as I do here.
Yeah, there are plenty of lids here that play games OFF the air. Then set
the mail rules to exclude everything sent to multiple addresses and/or
not specifically addressed to you. This eliminates over 90% of the spam
and requires no further attention AND it's easy to set up unlike most of
those spam killer programs.
MOST IMPORTANTLY is subscribe to a service that kills spam at the server
like my primary address does. That's right, I get NO SPAM whatsoever!
One rather silly thing is putting things like "nospam" in your address,
the robots have adapted to that a long time ago. In order for it to be
effective you have to change the inserted bit frequently and even then I
wonder, even the robots are smarter than you sometimes. (;->)
As for telemarketers pestering you on the phone, the best solution is to
simply hang up without saying a word AFTER the person has finished his or
her little speech. When their average work time (AWT) is computed against
successfull marketing their continued employment comes under scrutiny by
the company and their jobs get rather shaky. Yeah, if nothing else the
boss calls them out on the carpet for poor performance and you know what
that means.
While the computer is tracking the worker's AWT it's also keeping track
of the "hits and misses". If your number is a hit, you stay on the list
and get passed around (other companies buy that list) and get more
annoying calls than you can count in a day. If you're a miss consistently
you're dropped from the list as a "dry hole" since there is no point
spending AWT=MONEY on you.
The best way of killing unwanted callers at the source is government
legislation, something we here in the US have gotten after many years of
battling uphill and IT WORKS. While nothing, especially any law, is
perfect the number and rate of telemarketing calls has fallen flat and
those which try to squeeze through a loophole or another is taking a huge
risk. The frequency of such calls here at my QTH never was very much to
begin with (they hate my AWT tactic) but since I subscribed to the
National Do Not Call List it has fallen to just about zero, maybe some
charity calls every couple of months. (They're exempt.)
There is one huge push going on in that same direction regarding e-mail
spam but it looks like another uphill battle, this time with land mines.
It's well known that the greater bulk of it worldwide comes from the US
so just think what WE have to put up with please! Not to worry, like I
said we're on your side but when battling against big money guess who
wins for the most part.
Meanwhile, like when dealing with ANY unwanted stuff from computer
viruses to spam to telemarketing calls, a little simple, common sense is
in order. Yeah, you'd be surprised at how little the average person has
even the highly educated often fall flat in that area. It's back to
basics actually, throw away the book and use the brain, every one needs
excersise all the time or like anything else it atrophes. If you can't
walk to the end of the block without huffing and puffing you need to walk
more, leave the car in the garage. Likewise if you can't outsmart a paper
clip, well, turn off your computer now and start doing some simple math
problems.
The very bottom line here people is >>>COMMON SENSE<<< so remember it.
