New York City Amateur Radio Emergency Service {ARES} makes EchoLink a
permanent fixture:
As part of an effort to provide New York City-area served agencies
with better communication facilities, NYC-ARES New York City Amateur
Radio Emergency Service (ARES) has made permanent its installation of
K1RFD's EchoLink Voice-Over-Internet-Protocol software.
During the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack, it became obvious
that NYC-ARES needed some sort of "regional" communication mechanism,
said NYC-ARES spokesperson Mark Phillips, KC2ENI.
" Phillips says the new system will be within reach of all of
NYC-ARES' designated repeater systems as well as of many systems in
surrounding areas. The system will only be available to designated
Official Emergency Stations to guarantee its availability in a crisis.
Phillips said NYC-ARES is interested in hearing from other ARES groups
in the tri-state area and beyond to foster communication links using
this system.
"We believe that this is the first such use of this software and are
willing to work with other AERS/RACES groups in their deployment,"
