Hello Peter and all,
I remember well the railroad track side telephones in use right up to the
80s or so that were crank to ring, local battery, "dry" earth return
lines. They used exactly the same sort of circuit as the telegraph except
they of course used "wet" lines. Today it's all done by VHF FM RADIO.
Durn land line lids! "Hello Sarah? This is Barney. Connect me to the BBS,
and while you're at it, tell Andy he has some mail waiting."
