I wonder if the Coleman lamp is the same as the 'Tilley' lamp we used on
the farm in my youth, before electricity.
They had a brilliant white light and ran for a week on about half a pint
of paraffin. They did smell a bit if you cut corners by using TVO,Hi!
I'm not sure who invented them, though. I also had carbide lamps on my
pedal cycle about that time (acetylene). So bright that even oncoming
cars used to flash their lights to try to get me to dip mine.
Come to think of it, both were a lot cheaper than using batteries.
