It is interesting how fixed in our mind are some features of the world around
us.
Years ago, before I had visited the northern hemisphere, at work a visitor
from the UK got lost in Sydney because he knew that Circular Quay was to the
north of the CBD. So he put the sun at his back intending to walk to Circular
Quay. He ended up at Central Station, totally confused because there was no
harbour there.
This caused much amusement in the computer class he was teaching. However
when I did visit the UK a few years later I found it to be a very significant
phenomena. Walking around London (when the sun was out) required significant
effort to ignore the sun position. It needed regular concious thought.
