Hello Ray And The Thyristors,
What is that, a new rock band? Here we call them virgins, thigh
resistors. (BOO! HISS! BOO!)
On Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, the primary 3 PH transmission lines are
each tapped by a single phase step down transformer for catenary power.
The phase taps are staggered to balance the load as in all our power
distribution systems. No pots to go kerpow, no complications. That system
isn't without it's problems, caused mostly by dumb engineers. I have been
aboard disabled MUs because some fool had the pantographs arranged
incorrectly and bridged the first phase break they came to and the
train's electrical system went kerpow like your thyristors! Then a while
back I heard an engineer on the radio who had gotten herself in trouble
and crying for help from the dispatcher. It seems the dummy ran over a
red, a BIG no no, and the auto detection dumped in the hole. That means
the brakes got an emergency air application. She stopped in the middle of
a phase break and had no traction or HEP, dead in the water. To make
matters worse, her fiddling around caused a loss of air and the
pantograph went down. The poor woman was totally clueless! Eventually
someone from the trouble desk talked her through using reserve air to
raise the pan and release the brakes. The train rolled slowly forward and
back under live catenary. What followed was kept off the air. (;->)
Now why don't you in the Queen's Land take a tip from Hamersley Iron in
WA and can those popping pots for a fleet of Dash 9s? Then maybe they'll
sell you thier old rusting Alcos cheap...
As for the voltage upgrade, why the bigger right of way for the lines?
The only difference is in the line to line and line to tower clearance
unless you have some silly laws. Here we have 1.5 MV lines side by side
with the older 250 KV ones on the same size towers. Just wider arms and
longer insulator strings. The only difference I notice is the prickling
of every hair on my body while standing under them. WOO! Creepy!
