I presume that Ian is referring to the coaxial cable connectors made to
suit such cable as RG8-U or RG213 etc.
I agree that the "N" COAXIAL Connector can seem to present some anomaly
where it comes to being a "plug" i.e. fitting INTO (inside) the opposite
(socket) receptacle.
However, the matter is determined by the design of the centre pin.
With the "Plug" the centre pin fits INSIDE the centre socket. Thus the
plug can be described as a MALE connector and the socket FEMALE.
There is no need to worry about the terms used as not being politically
correct. We all (should) know what it is about and it is certainly based
on what we know of nature.
There are certain connectors (plugs and sockets ?) which do not follow
these same rules. A well known example is the General Electric (GE) RF
connectors.
These have both split centre pins, which are rectangular in shape, and
split outer rims, with a slightly curved, but also generally rectangular
shape.
They are made in such a manner that they look identical and mate together
by being positioned at right-angles to each other.
They were referred to "in the trade" as being a "hermaphrodite" connector.
