Grab a drink (mine's a coffee, white and 2 sugars)...This is long...
Well here I am recovering after yet another day at the office,
and a hectic evening/early morning in the Shack sorting out this
rotten PC.
Here's the story:
Pentium III 450MHz - 384MB RAM - 4GB HD to perform as a Server to
host the Internet connection and talk to the outside World for various
reasons (my Internet Link, for example).
What OS do I use? Hmm.. Win98 SE? WinME or Win2000 ???
Thanks to Roger G4IDE for his help (Win98 SE), which I am sorry to say
I didn't get on with - wouldn't let my Video Blaster run at 800x600
despite downloading the drivers...Big pain in the bum.
I opted in the end for Windows ME - which I have always been happy with
and it's actually doing great things now...With all the updates downloaded
it seems to be holding up.
Using the "go-back" feature, I can restore to a previous "milestone"
and recover from any mishaps that I may have caused...
(and I've caused a few!)
It's good to know that us "youngsters" who are just getting to grips
with things, and experimenting with different modes are able to ask
for help and get some great advice + suggestions from some people who
know what they're talking about and have the patience when you're
constantly saying:
"this don't work - it's the software...not my fault"
Isn't it great, that at the other end of an RF forwarding path
(or a landline - heaven forbid!), we've got some people who are willing
to help, advise and answer endless questions...Probably a good time to
recognise some of those we owe thanks to...
We have (in no particular order):-
Roger G4IDE's WinPack + UI-View
Paula G8PZT's BBS + X-Router (a top bit of kit)
Ted G8NPF's Sally Program (idiot guide required)
Brian G1NNA (NNB junior) with the NNA BBS software
I must also say thanks to George G1NNB (my sysop) who has provided
no-end of support over the last couple of months. Answering my questions
about Packet, why this don't work - why something's gone wrong
and how the mail gets routed about the place...
All of the above have helped me in some way recently, and it's about time
that we said a big "THANKS" to them.
There are others: Harry M1BYT, Mel G4WYW, Pete G6KUI + Mick G6ASJ
who I have had dealings with and have been grateful for their input.
Also, Warren KB2VXA who has offered advice (via e-mail+packet) with
regards to Anti-Virus + Firewall software.
One of these days I'll have a perfect PC set-up... Linux, anyone?
There have certainly been some interesting bulletins + discussions over
the last few weeks...
The Plugs 'n' Sockets saga has been riveting...
The Hot-Air/Balloon debate has been uplifting...
Well that's enough from me...
