No, you are wrong Warren....
Vacuum tubes (valves in the UK) would only float if they were able to
displace more than there own weight of whatever substance they were in.
In water they float, in air (on earth at least) they would sink.
An airship or ship does have to displace air or water to float. A ship
rises out of the water until its weight exactly balances the weight of
water it is displacing. Add weight and it will sink to displace more
water equal to the extra weight added. Make the vessel in water a sealed
one and assuming it is not too heavy it will sink under the surface and
at some depth stop sinking further, once it reaches a balance of
displacement (submarine).
An airship or balloon rises in the atmosphere until the weight of air it
displaces exactly matches the weight of the airship or balloon. The
higher it goes, the less dense is the air.
