Hi Ian,

I recall 'plug' was often confusingly used to mean a 'wall socket' even
amongst the professionals in the 60's, with the item which plugged into
it being called the 'plug top'. Ask for a 'wall plug' and you might well
find yourself handed a Rawlplug. All very confusing.

The term 'socket outlet' is also sometimes used for a wall socket.

'Lamps' is often used to cover both ordinary bulbs and flourescent
tubes.
