OK, it's an "urban legend" or would be taken as one here. Honestly, we
have none of the strange problems with flourescents I have been reading
about from Europe. We turn them on, we turn them off, we leave them on.
No problems at all and no mixing of gasses.
FYI, the only gas involved in the electrical operation of a flourescent
is mercury vapor. It mixes with nothing. It is simply a mercury vapor arc
lamp with a phosphor coating on the inside of the glass which glows in
response to the ultra violet light produced by the mercury arc.
When the lamp is turned on, even for a second, the liquid mercury on the
end electrodes vaporizes and conducts electricity. When the lamp is
switched off, the vapor cools and condenses on the electrodes again.
That's all there is to it.
