SHORT TAILS FOR FEEDERS.
In a previous bulletin I made comment regarding feeder connections to
antennas.
With regard to dipoles I would pass along the following suggestions:-
I have found it very convenient to fabricate HF dipoles in a way such that
there is simply a short length of coaxial feeder cable, perhaps about 91
centimetres (3 feet) in length which is then terminated in a connector.
I generally use a length of cable such as "RG58-U" with the connector
being a "BNC" type.
It is a simple matter to then connect this to a larger cable using
suitable adapters, in the case of a permanent installation, or to a
further length length of similar cable (RG58) so as to reach the relevant
equipment.
The second approach is particularly convenient where a portable antenna is
concerned as the dipole can be wound up for carrying purposes and easily
unwound, withot too many tangles, to lay it out for installation.
The feeder cable, similarly wound up for carrying purposes, can then be
unwound and stretched out in a suitable manner prior to plugging it in to
the coaxial cable "tail" on the dipole.
As also explained in the previous bulletin, such an approach makes it easy
to test for faults either on the antenna itself or in the feed cable.
One can also have on hand several lengths of feeder cable so as to cater
for antenna installations at varying heights.
I have yet to get around to producing a verbal description of the method
that I employ for construction of wire dipoles which employs a simple but
effective means of supporting the associated feed cable.
It would be useful to have a suitable drawing made up to demonstrate the
method used, however, I will have to experiment with this approach as I do
not have any specific skills in producing diagrams such as needed with a
Packet Radio message of this nature.
Any hints or tips on how to approach this aspect would be appreciated.
