Hello Wolfgang and fellow rail fans,
Thank you very much for the further info on Euro traction. I have plenty
of photos of the DB locos, ICE trains and yes, quite a few of the
Frankfurt trams going back to pre war days. BTW, the Luftwaffe sure made
a mess of British Rail and I have a photo of that too. (;->)
Now I know just a bit more of "what's inside the box". OH, before
changing subjects, until the photo turned up, I didn't know the
Bismarck's sister ship, the Prinze Eugen was resurrected as an ICE train.
Nice way of keeping that famous name alive!
NYCTA as it's now called being a consolidation of several subway lines
now uses 600VDC third rail current derived from normal Con Edison 3 phase
mains. The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) also uses the same system and the
substations can be seen at regular intervals along the various lines.
Trams use the same DC voltage and there has been a huge comeback in the
old trolly lines. Some are being built where none existed before. When
the automobile destroyed the railroads, most of the tracks were taken up
and the right of way lost forever. Many of the abandoned lines that still
exist are also being reopened. The US made a HUGE mistake which now is
very difficult to correct, but we're doing our best because the cars and
trucks have long ago reached thier limits, passenger and freight service
is badly needed.
I quite possibly made a mistake about that Reading RR catenary voltage. I
was told years ago when the railroad still existed it was 25KVDC, but
could have quite possibly been 2.5KV. Anyway, it sure made quite an arc
when the pantographs were being rearranged in the terminal at
Philadelphia for the outbound trip.
As for me, couldn't be happier with the railway locomotives blowing thier
horns on one side and the rolling surf on the other. From the other end
of the house in the morning I can hear the roar of the marine Diesels as
the fishing fleet leaves the harbor. Nice little town Point Pleasant
Beach NJ is...
