My experience with fluorescent bulbs is bad. It takes a while before
they emit their full brightness. Also after a while they suddenly
became defect. I asked other hams here in Holland if they had similar
experiece which they confirmed.
Some of these bulbs hardly had any brightness left after say 8 months.
I could not use them anymore and replaced them by normal ones.
Hams also wrote me the ones with the lowest power would last the
longest. They also wrote me better not to use them eg in rooms
in which you often switch them on and off, like the toilet.
They would not stand it. One ham told me the lamps of a lot
of brands did not last very long due to heath they develop which
cannot escape.
A shopkeeper told me these bulbs should only be installed at places
where always illumination should be like in offices during the night.
The cheap low quality ones would not last very long.
I don't buy them anymore; too expensive considering price/lifetime.
In shops like Home Depot in the USA, overhere they are offered for
low prices, but most people take the old ones. Illumination
has always been a very profitable business of Philips/Eindhoven.
Eindhoven is called here "City of Light" because of this.
Consumer electronics always have been the opposite.
I guess they don't like it if the consumer would not replace his
bulbs once in a while. If so, I don't blame them, as they
would have to close their plants all over the world.
Who wants to manufacture something cheap that lasts a lifetime ?
