Hello Wolfgang and rail fans,
Thank you very much for the information on railroad traction power. Your
bull will be edited (the unrelated text deleted) and forwarded to a
couple of rail fan friends. I'm sure they will find it as interesting and
informative as I did. I have quite a few pictures of those dual and even
multi voltage locomotives, and now your text explains them.
Here in the Northeast, we had two (that I know of) systems, the
Pennsylvania RR, a major portion called The Northeast Corridor from
Boston to Washington used 11KV 25~ and the Reading which served
Southeastern Pennsylvania used 25KV DC.
Now what remains of the old railroads now Amtrak, New Jersey Transit and
South East Pennsylvania Transit Authority use 11KV 60~. NJT uses
locomotives made by Brown Boveri of Switzerland which like the taste of
US current. I don't know just who makes the others.
There was one interesting aspect of the PRR, the E-33 and E-44 locos used
600VDC traction motors with power transformed and controlled by
thyratrons. Thier most famous workhorse was the GG-1 which used AC and
had 22 taps on the transformer coresponding to the 22 notches on the
throttle. In it's day it was the most powerful loco in the world and was
designed to cruise at 110 mph. Today the big boy is the Deisel electric
commonly called the dash 9.
That brings me to Deisel electrics. In the beginning they used DC
traction, but now use 660VAC 3 phase. HEP is 440V 3 phase used for coach
lighting, heating and air conditioning. Under power, the prime mover
turns at a constant 800rpm delivering constant frequency (don't know
which) and solid state AC traction motor controls vary speed and torque.
