Hi Mel.
Degaussing works but now that professional degausing wands no longer exist
you might have to make a roll of 1000 t fed from the mains and wave it
over it.
The way the police examine a HDD is to take the disc out and mount it on a
special reader which just crudely scans the disc for the remains of data
on it. If someone has only hit delete, than most of the drive will have
complete pictures/progs.
I have Spybot S&D with it's 'shredder' option. I think it works. I did
have another free utility but it's trial period expired. I am not in the
habit of going to illegal sexy websites but I don't like my disc to be
open to anyone.
I have never degaussed a HDD but i did once degauss a VCR tape with
rubbish on it. It worked a treat...and I didn't even have to take it out
of the cassette.
I like the other ideas. A lump hammer, a brick and a cloth to hold in the
bits sounds favourite.
