Hello

The best way to destroy a harddisk is to drill a hole , of
say 10mm 1/3 off center of the unit, thru the whole thing.
Shure, Amboss and sledgehammer are fine as well.
Acid ? I am not so shure about...As might be incineration.
Incineration with a surplus of oxygen to temperatures above
, say 3600c maybe. Undiluted acids at elevated temperatures
might also work.

But the question was : NO Chance of even retrieving one
byte.
The data carrier is the disc inside or more than one. These
discs, often made of aluminium or glass as carrier plate.
And , in theory , as long as you have a defined surface of
the size which might carry one byte - it could be retrieved.
So only grinding the platters into powder particle sizes of
less than one (1) byte will do it.

But why destroy it ! Keep it as conversion/demonstration
piece !
Opening it up and exposing the innards to the regular dusty
atmoshere will make it unusable. Exept for the cost of
transporting it to an acceptable cleanroom, having it
cleaned and mounted (the stack of platters) on a usable
frame with electronics...and youre NOT willing to paying a
penny : That is the shurest thing!
