Hi John and all,

I guess this machine is from the era that quite a few machines already did
have onboard UTP ethernet, though many indeed did have not.

I would expect both PCs to have a printer port, even the new Dell. Why not
use a parallel link cable? If you or somebody else would have one, it would
be the cheepest option and certainly faster than using Serial.

If you can't use a parallel link cable and if you do not have a large enough
external hardisk or memory stick available, I would just buy a new PCI
ethernet card and hook the old machine in the network, or just use a cross
cable and manually set the network configuration for each machine.
But, as he is running a small business, buying an external harddisk might be
a good idea, as these are also very handy to store backups. Getting the data
from the old machine and making sure there is a reliable backup is I guess a
business requirement.

As Andy already pointed out, the cost for a PCI network card is low, but
already rising I noticed! At one of the computer stores in the area I did
see the price go from 8 to 8.95 euro (GBP 5.30 to 5.90).
Guess it is time to stock a few PCI UTP cards for upgrading older systems;
after all, these older systems are still great for Packet Radio.
One of the machines I use is an old P133 that holds my packet radio page and
also is used as a mail-server (Radio-ports and BBS on another machine).
