It's a very cheap way to get Mac software. But it is a cost engineered
version, so it has a laptop harddisk inside making it not outrageously
fast. The expansion options are limited and expensive.
I cant give you a feel for how to compare a G4 1.4GHz to an Intel/Windows
combo. But what you need to consider is do you want to run Apple software?
If you do, this is a cheap way to do it. Especially if you have PC
keyboards and mice and monitors lurking.
You will find lots websites and magazine article saying that for the cost
you can build a PC with a 3GHz P4 CPU and memory and disk etc. and how that
works out in comparison to a Minimac. But they miss the point... it wont be
in a cute, small, quite box and it wont RUN APPLE SOFTWARE.
So if you want a cute box, that runs cool software, that isnt affected by
over 100,000 PC viruses, that doesnt require you to isolate your PC from
the world like Howard Hughes so you dont catch nasties, then a Minimac is
what you want. If you want to replace you sub-400 ukp 3GHz P4, Radeon
Ultra+++ firebreathing PC, or you want to do serious Mac software
development, then a Minimac isnt for you.
