IARU Region III Conference begins soon
--------------------------------------
Most of the 70 delegates for the WIA hosted International Amateur Radio Union
Region III conference being held August 28 to September 1 in Darwin, are
scheduled to arrive this weekend.
Also attending, having been afforded IARU conference observer status, will be
representatives from the Vietnam Amateur Radio Club and the East Timor Amateur
Radio Society - from two emerging amateur radio countries in the region.
WIA Federal President, Peter Naish VK2BPN in his opening address on Monday,
August 28, is to touch on the traditions, community or national value, and
long term future of the amateur radio service in an era of eager demand for
spectrum by commercial interests.
A full text of the speech will be released on the Internet and packet systems
on Conference Day 1. Also during the conference progress report bulletins are
also to be issued to keep the amateur radio fraternity informed.
Final testing is underway for the launch of AX8IARU - the special event
station to be on air from the conference venue until September 1.
The Darwin Amateur Radio Club has been working hard in the past few days
installing the station, coaxial feedlines and roof top antennas.
AX8IARU will be on the 10, 15, 20, 40, 75 and 80 metre bands, as well as VHF
and UHF for local contacts. Operators will be Darwin Club members and
conference delegates.
Some satellite operation may be possible with attempts to access UoSAT-14 on
FM. Listen out on 435.070MHz (+/- Doppler Shift) and uplink on 145.975MHz for
AX8IARU. HF Digital modes may also be possible.
A special commemorative QSL card has been produced. QSL route is via VK8DA,
either through the bureau or direct.
Darwin Amateur Radio Club members are also meeting and greeting delegates as
they arrive at Darwin airport and transported to their accommodation.
