                    TIME FRAME CIRCA MID 1980'S

In the beginning there was the CRRL and CARF. From their collective loins
and their subsequent demise sprang forth their Progony .

Their progony was RAC, and verily in the eyes of its conceptualisers it was
a beautiful and glorious reincarnation of its genetic creators', CARF/CRRL.

Amongst its many friends and relatives their abided the view,
that this new Creation would be seen to be the messiah of amateur radio
in our fair country, Canada. RAC our messiah.

From its birth their would be a cleansing, an anihalation of
past terrible memories of spilt alliances, lost allegiances and,
broken promises and a new union was formed, the" BROTHERS OF PRIVILEDGE."

These High Priests of Amateur Radio, the" BOP" were sworn to eradicate
the abominations that had plagued there predecessors, the DUES PAYERS,
or DP's as they became known.

In the ranks of the BOP there resided many ambitious hams who wished
to propogate themselves into double or even triple hops.

In their midsts was Tom Atkins VE3CDM, Tom was a double hopper and a BOP.
He was a zealous BOP and spoke his mind to the BOP and their flock the
DUES PAYERS. The primary job of the DUES PAYERS or DP's as they
are known, was to provide for the Welfare State of the BOP's.

The BOP's would ocassionally abuse the DP's and play cruel tricks on them.
VE3CDM was a pretty "tricky" kind a guy and he saw that the DP's were
becoming rebblious, and threatened revelution.

The DP's had found and were developing a network communication system know as
                     !!!! FM REPEATERS !!!!

This was heresy to Tricky Tom and he vowed to crush this abomination on the
land. If the DP's could talk amongst themselves using tiny litlle radios with
little rubber antennas, while the BOP's had to use long wires, heavy towers,
multi-element beams, why they could DESTROY BOP CULTURE!

So Tricky Tom decided ATOMIC WAR which was popular at the time was required.
He would destroy the DP's, wipe their scrawny little bodies from the face of
amateur radio, so he spoketh as follows.

Oh by the way Tom Atkins VE3CDM grew up to be the President of
the IARU Region 2 i.e. The International Amateur Radio.
Tom has a friend, his name is Dana Shtun VE3DSS who is a RAC DIRECTOR.

Tricky Tom also has a few pages in THE CANADIAN AMATEUR from time to time.
RAC is a member society of the IARU.

Read on and see if Tom can frighten you my dear friend and dues payer,(DP).

                    ------------------------------

The following is gleaned from Volume 22, Fall 1987 issue of
"Bulletin of The British Columbia F.M. Communication Association.

   Editor, Dan Collier, VE7DES

                            The Neutron Tongue

This month, we're into quotations (not the VSE). Here's one from the
Concise Oxford Dictionary, Second Edition, 1929 (!), page 4:

ABOMINABLE, a. Detestable, odious, morally or physically
loathsome; (by concious exaggeration) unpleasant. Hence
       abominableNESS n., abominabLY adv.[F (ab., abh.), f. L
abominabilis f. AB(ominari f. omen) deprecate; the older
spelling was regularly abh, due to confusion w. homo,
and the violence of the meaning (inhuman instead of ill-omened)
       results from the mistake.]
         ABOMINATION, n. Loathing, odious or degrading habit or act;
an object of disgust (to) [F (abiominate, -ation]

Enjoy those sensuously vile words you'd normally save for really
emotional bursts. The English language, robust as it is, isn't rated
for heavy-routed rhetoric at any but the lightest duty cycle!

At the 1987 Saskatoon Hamfest, TOM ATKINS VE3CDM, President
of CRRL, held forth during the plenary session of the CARF/CRRL
National Symposium and delivered the following invective:

                    "REPEATERS ARE THE GREATEST ABOMINATION
                     IN THE AMATEUR SERVICE"

******** That ended a ten-minute tangent that wandered from 2-m code
practice, past a debate over license tech requirements, to an account
of operation on UK VHF. Tom might have held that opinion to himself
since it won't make any repeaters go away. Language is a deadly
weapon in the hands and tongues of widely respected amateurs.
By quoting it, I dream of turning the weapon on its triggerman!*********

To criticize Tom's accomplishments is not my point. I have
great respect for one who can occupy an office like that for years
and keep his health and sanity. I quote this "abomination" to
express my own opinion, that such public figures can't fire disparaging
blasts from a positon of responsibility and and get away with it.

******** The remark had no purpose in any discussion of national repeater
policy, presumably being guided by symposium resolutions. It DOES
reveal that the FM/RPT segment of amateur radio is not getting the
national support that it desperately needs, and never will as long
as guys like Tom Atkins are running the national organizations.********

Ham radio cannot continue in this atmosphere. Blindside attacks
find their weakest victims among the volunteers who have built
the regional and local radio cllubs with their sacrifices. If you are
guilty of making such attacks, I beg of you: NO MORE.

So you thought FM was great. I still do, for reasons that over-
turned my old contempt for the BCFMA. The ham society that we
loved to hate has grown to rival the national organizations. I am
very proud to say that BCFMA execs and members have acheived
this despite a chorus of asinine remarks lobbed by the nationals.
FM was great, FM is still great, and it will be remembered for, if
nothing else, its role in the development of packet radio.

                  "Sic transit, gloria intelligentia
                   communtationibus frequentationis."
end-

NOW REMEMBER THAT I, HART VE3XEV DID NOT REPORT THE "THE NEUTRON TONGUE".
10 YEARS AGO TOM ATKINS VE3CDM " BOP" WAS MAKING A FOOL OF HIMSELF
AND CONTINUES TO DO SO!
