Here's another thought.
All through the Zeroes, people have been saying "Two thousand and three",
"two thousand and four" etc.
Next year, will they say "Two thousand and ten" or will they stop using 5
syllables and just say 20 - 10; much quicker.
Just because some duff film director made a film called "Two Thousand and
One...etc" back in the '70s and TV keeps repeating it
doesn't mean we have to follow like sheep.
