Hi John and all,
I forgot just what those devices are called but the odd term "surgistor"
comes to mind. It's a voltage sensitive device that shunts spikes to
ground and often shorts blowing the fuse or tripping the breaker. Since
thy are contained in protected outlet strips and wall socket surge
protectors you can simply remove them and use an external device.
OH! It just came to me, MOV or metal oxide varistor. They're usually
rated at twice the peak AC mains voltage, just do the math.
