HI any experts.

I am putting my foot in it here by possibly admitting I know little or nother
about switch mode PSU's apart from basic theory.

Give me a good old fashioned transformer any day and I know where I am.

So when a PSU for one of my Ex PMR Rigs blew up after a power surge I tried
to find a repair agent but as with much of this stuff it is now to old and
they no longer deal with them.

But I was lucky in a way as the chap I spoke to apeared to know what I was
talking about and also basicaly what to check ? Check the little Red VDR just
after the mains input ? yep I found that Ok, but here I have a problem.

It is RED and I managed to get hold of a couple but they black and Blue but
no Red ones ? No marking that I can see on the RED one so I presume like a
Resistor Colour code that the colour is the value ?

Can anyone on here tell me what the heck these little beasts are all about
and just what the colour represents and where I may obtain replacement ones
from as I presume they are obtainable easily enough if only I knew what I was
looking for ?

VDR ? Voltage dependant resistor perhaps ? sounds like an odd sort of beast
to me but as above at my age I cut my teath on transformers and Valves and
found it hard enough adapting to 3 legged Silicon blobs, these things have me
rearly confused. Anyone else remember the real Cats whisker ???

Without the sarcastic remarks !!! Any help apreciated please.
