I do agree with Pete about the advisability of using
fixed width fonts for packet but interestingly John's
H2SO4 test lined up fine on my display (you need to
get some proper packet software Pete :-) but the reason
Pete did not see it correctly is rather more subtle
than variable fonts.
Below is the HEX grab of the line as sent by my local
BBS and you can see that John has indented his text by
using the tab key which is the 09 character at the
start of the first line.
We must presume that Pete's software does not respond
to the TAB control character? Everything I've tested
here including paket6.2 does display the text as
John intended starting at the 9th column
It may have worked for Pete if you had hit tab at
the start of the second line before hitting space
to reach the required column.

hopefully I can get Pete's display to line up
subscript. Like H SO but is not feasible here. (H2SO4)

by using spaces instead of TAB so another rule John would
seem to be do not use the TAB key on packet if you want
everyone to see your text as you intend it. Having said
that I often view bulletins at work via the web interface
at GB7PZT where the bulletins are rendered into HTML but that
appears to strip out all extra spaces so you probably can't
win all the time no matter what you do :-)
Lets see what sort of mess my NNTP ISOcode compatible
news reader makes of this when its gated into normal
packet land :-)
