That is a neat trick that I will have to try.

However, it always worked with the "Microsoft Photo Editor" that belongs
to the same suite. Copy in Word, Paste in MPE did the trick, even if it
does not work in other programs.
From MPE you could copy to any other program, if you liked.
If you have, say, a W98 machine, you will most likely have it somewhere.

Lately, I do not see the Microsoft Photo Editor anymore, it is now
something different, bigger and more intimidating no doubt.

But that does not matter anymore. Irfanview will also accept a Paste from
an image that was Copied in Word. And it is freeware. It will do other
tricks, but that is not part of this discussion.

Just one thing: the image should not be 'In Line' in your Word Document.
Change it to 'Floating above Text' (or whatever they call it, I have a
national language version).
If you don't, the colours will still be wrong, which was the whole point.
