Every 15 seconds for some of the locals.
"Yup! That mountain didn't move yet!"

Hey, that's not quite so silly near where you live, Hank. I remember Kentucky
Fried Chicken giving away little cups of Mt. St. Helens ash here in the Bay
Area.

Didn't think anyone would notice the "yet"!

Several of the APRS nodes I can hear are near St. Helens
and Adams (the adjacent volcano).

I noticed the "yet". I interpreted it as generic sarcasm, shame on me!
You can be subtle when you really want to :-)

Heh heh ... quite a lot of what (many/most) folks take for sarcasm is
either my Midwest dry humor, or something subtle just to see if anyone
is paying attention ... or at least an attempt at same ;-)

Some folks think I take this stuff seriously!

We would be more concerned if Mt. Hood blew, since it is a bit closer
than St. Helens and Adams. Adams about 75 miles (nice view of it
out the shack window), Hood about 55 (also nice view), St. Helens
about 65 (behind the ridge to our north).

Perhaps GPS at each of the nodes near volcanos (or faults) would
provide useful data to the folks who monitor such things. Don't know
of anyone doing this. Suspect USGS might even fund something.

At one time I had a receiver on VLF hooked to a chart recorder.
Monitored one or another of those "big signals" at 10.2 KHz, 13.7 KHz,
etc. Nice sunrise/sunset effect, but the main use was to get early
warning of incoming ionospheric shocks, which might trigger some
unusual auroral propagation. Was doing a lot of DXing on 2M at the time.
Might be useful to have some systems like this toss alerts into APRS,
or perhaps better into the DX Cluster network.

(To the Land Line Lids: yes, I *know* the internet is faster)
