When the QRM disappears by disconnecting the cables, it is apparently
radiated by the cables. When your cables already are shielded, and you
already tried the toroids, just discard or sell the machine. It will be
too difficult to make any improvements.

There are several GUI (gtk, motif, etc.) front-ends for psk31lx (which
is text-based). See http://radio.linux.org.au and search on "digital".

Well, there's 3 programs that I know of that you can use for PSK31...
There's twpsk(which requires LessTif), Phaseshift(which requires Qt) and
gpsk(which requires gtk). I prefer twpsk or Phaseshift.
Check 'em out, I've been successful with both Phaseshift and twpsk.

Where did you look before you concluded there weren't any?
The main three (gpsk31, phaseshift and twpsk) are all in the
Linux archive at metalab.unc.edu, waiting to be downloaded.
I've used twpsk and it works well.

Subject: PSK Operating
Hello all, I have recently been operating PSK31 mainly on 20 meters.
Sometimes when I have called CQ I get a signal coming back without a proper
preamble of my callsign de the other callsign and I don't know whether the
station is coming back to me or starting to talk to some other station. I
notice this a lot also on CW where stations responding to a CQ come up with
just their callsign.
This is a plea to please think of the fellow at the other end who may have
QRM or QRN and under such circumstances it is good operating practice to
give his callsign clearly at the commencement of a QSO.
My own practice is that if I am responding to a CQ I give the station called
at least three of his callsigns de three of mine so that it is clearly
determined who is calling who.

I could be wrong. But I think you may need the enhancement board to run
Pactor with the KAM. You may want to ask KANTRONICS.
