meaningless to Amateurs. Why? Simple. If I was to say that I wasn't
going to train myself for national emergencies (US), or do experimenting
(Oz), would I (could I) be penalised in any way?
All of that preamble waffle in the licences means essentially nothing
when it comes to the practicalities how Amateurs must conduct
themselves. Such statements are ideals, not mandates. You can tell the
things that are mandated. They have penalties for non-compliance.
In Amateur Radio, if it's permitted, then you can do it for any reason
that you like.

Do you have call letter license plates?
In Michigan to get call letter license plates you are really volunteering
you and your car for emergency services and are subject to call when such
arises.
Probably why they only cost $2.00 extra.

I am unable to transmit from the MIXWDEMO32 software (it is used in PSK31

corrected this.
Many thanks

Subject: Small TNC?
If you don't want to go with a radio modem like a Baycom or Tigertronics but a
TNC, the Paccomm PicoPacket TNC is the ticket. It's small like a pack of
cigarettes. It has a jack to plug in a battery. It also has an optional
battery pack, optional 2nd serial port, or even the option of a built in GPS.
Check out:
www.paccomm.com
I use my Pico with a Casio handheld PC & an Alinco HT. I could run APRS
either
for CE or when it's connected to my old 486 laptop, I can run WinAPRS.
Good luck & 73's.

It depends on your use, are you looking stand-alone or something
connected to a computer?
What mode(s) do you want to use and options?
You need to figure these out, then see what units offer what you
want and pick one.
Obviously a laptop would not last long on batt. power so it looks
like stand-alone operation, maybe with a Nicad batt. and a solar cell
charger, remember even simple can get expensive.

Reread the original posting. The poster was looking for digital
modes *with a sound card*. Which does not mean "a DOS machine"
with "a simple basic TU".
Sheesh.

The software does exist and it depends on which of the digital modes you want
to work.
One of the slickest RTTY,Amtor,CW programs COMPRTTYII runs on a DOS machine
and uses a simple basic TU. The 8086/88 machine I have here still runs it. And
it evens works great on my P3.
For PSK31 my old 486/33 with 3.11 runs PSK31 for Windows, from Peter G3PLX
just fine...

Do I at LEAST GET HALF CREDIT for mentioning PSK31 for Windows by Peter G3PLX
which runs just fine Running under 3.11 on my 486/33.
Which while its "Unlikely to do the Job" becuase doesn't it have "brute CPU
power" and being this slow most certainly "will not be viable" Runs just fine.
Althought I probably shouldn't even have thought about using it as its only a
486.
What was I thinking..?
Sheesh
