are
now! So, can you afford $6.00 and see if it really works? I think so...
People have said, "What if the plan is played out and no one sends you
the
money? So what! What are the chances of that happening when there are
tons
of new honest users and new honest people who are joining the internet
and
newsgroups everyday and are willing to give it a try? Estimates are at
20,000 to 50,000 new users, everyday, with thousands of those joining
the
actual Internet. REMEMBER, play FAIRLY and HONESTLY and this will
really

work. The possibilities can be endless...You will never know, unless
you

give it a try... otherwise, it will always be "what if."
GOOD LUCK!

Believe it or not, the Hayes 1200B modems came with morse code ability. Look
in one of the appendices. I think one could take the modem "off-hook" by
issuing ATH2, which put the modem in "transmit mode" (and shorted the second
pair of wires together), and then periods and dashes sent to it came out as
code. At the end of the transmission, one had to issue a special command to
keep it "off-hook" but otherwise disconnect it (i.e. "receive mode"). Too bad
that it didn't actually receive the code too.

Anybody got a recent set of the PK232 PROMs (firmware)?? I hate to pay
$50 for the latest rev just to try out packet....since there apparently isn't
much activity.....but I'd like to try it out before I spend the $50 to
Timewave
for the latest ones.....a rev back or so should still work I would
think....anyone
got any they replaced??? I got my PK232 w/o any PROMs somehow.
Thanks,
John

I thought all the versions of PK232 firmware supported packet. Your PK-232
should already do packet. Give it a try!!

I suspect that you are really referring to Pactor not packet. Yes, you will
likely need the latest firmware from Timewave for Pactor.

I have heard that the PK-232 firmware from Timewave works well in Pactor.
(But I can't tell you from first hand experience since I do not have a
PK-232).

By the way, there is a lot of Pactor 1 activity on HF. Many Hams still use
Pactor to access BBS's on HF (though some Ham's have upgraded to Pactor II
by buying the PTC II or PTC IIe from SCS). You cannot upgrade the PK-232 to
Pactor II.

It is much better to use an opto isolator to key the PTT line.
(for such a circuit, see www.qsl.net/wm2u)

If you use a transistor, you will defeat the purpose of using audio
isolation transformers on the audio lines to and from the sound card.
