The Kachina 505DSP implements its RS232 communication with the computer
via a MAX232 chip internal to the radio. Direct cable from the computer
serial port to the radio.

Most hamradio equipment manufacturers are too cheap to include RS232
circuits in their transceivers: they provide the signal as TTL, and leave
the conversion to RS232 to an external interface sold as an optional extra.

Of course no real ham buys this interface (another $50 item that has only a
MAX232 in it!). When you build your own, you can include isolation in it,
and conveniently do it at the TTL side.

No. This may be a problem as well, but that is not a ground loop.

The ground loop is a loop of wire through your shack.
It does not suddenly appear or disappear, but its adverse effects may.
Because it causes trouble only if current is induced in it by a magnetic
field, and if this current is converted to voltage by a resistor some
where it should not be. (ground connection in a connector, path between
connector and signal ground of input amplifier, etc)

Is the RS232 signal ground isolated from the frame ground?

True. This must be the first disadvantage to having RS-232 straight
out of the radio though (as my FT-847 does).

Hello Mike,

Are you absolutely certain of your comport selection and settings? That would
cause this symptom.
