It's unlikely that a 486 will do the job. You need brute CPU
power, which means a 486DX/66, minimum. At that, it will
be breathing pretty hard. Anything slower will not be viable.
Don't even think about a 486SX.

The software you seek may never have been written for Windows
3.1. If there's anything around, it will be in the usual
repositories, like simtel and cica.

Sorry.

Subject: starting RITTY (4.0)

Hi Jim,

Yes, RITTY may work just fine under Windows 95. But Windows 98 is a
different story for many Hams.

Many DOS programs appear to run much better under Windows 95 or DOS than
Windows 98. (e.g. CT runs much better if run from DOS not in a Windows 98
DOS box). In fact, some OEM versions of Windows 98 will not let a DOS
program launched from windows to even access the serial COM ports. This
can be a BIG problem for DOS terminal or communications programs or DOS
programs that use the serial COM port to key the PTT line of the rig. I do
not think that the OEM versions of Windows 95 ever had this problem.

(Windows 98 that came with my Toshiba has this problem. According to
Toshiba, if you boot directly into DOS at startup, the DOS program can
access the serial COM ports. They are right!)

By all means try running each DOS program from windows but if it doesn't
work then try booting to DOS directly at startup and running the program.
For many Hams that solves the problem.

This is not a problem, this is "Innovation". You know, the thing that Bill
Gates thinks you will be deprived of when the government gets its way.

Those programs will probably run just fine in DOSEMU under Linux. Because
that is more like a real DOS box.
VMWARE running DOS under Linux or Windows NT will be even better. That
provides a virtual PC running DOS. You can run Windows 98 in another
virtual PC if you like.

When you want to run legacy DOS applications, you should not upgrade your
OS too often. Especially not when the supplier of the OS wants to bash
DOS out of this world.

Subject: WinWarbler - a new PSK31 program

WinWarbler allows you to conduct QSOs using the PSK31 mode developed by
Peter Martinez, G3PLX. To aid PSK31 DXers, WinWarbler can simultaneously
decode and display PSK transmissions on three separate frequencies. A PC
running Windows 95, 98, 2000, or NT is required. WinWarbler is free, and
contains no advertising. Commercial use is expressly forbidden.

WinWarbler utilizes the PSK engine developed by Moe Wheatley, AE4JY; by
encapsulating his expertise in a reusable component, Moe has reduced the
time required to develop a PSK31 application to a few days (including a
couple of transatlantic flights). The WinWarbler installation package
includes version 1.05 of Moe's PSKCore.DLL.

You can download WinWarbler 1.0 from http://www.qsl.net/winwarbler/ -
consider this a beta release, as testing to date has been limited to a dozen
QSOs; defect reports, comments, and suggestions will be gratefully accepted.
WinWarbler's online help is provided in HTML, which you can evaluate at
http://www.qsl.net/winwarbler/Help/ before downloading the entire package.

WinWarbler is written in Visual Basic; source code will be made available
for non-commercial use at the completion of the beta period.

      Dave, AA6YQ
