I rather suspected this was the logic.

I'm still mildly tempted to build a pedantic flavor of AX.25 for giggles,
maybe I can save the trouble by looking at ancient tcp-group archives?

The relatively short sequence-number stream is certainly an issue here. X.25
was clearly designed for relatively reliable wired circuits, and certainly
leaves
a bit to be desired in the translation to radio circuits, even relatively good
ones. Old news, I know, but I've been recently reminded :-)

Forget it - I found the answer....

95.627 Emission types.

(a) A GMRS transmitter must transmit only emission types A1D, F1D, G1D,
H1D, J1D, R1D, A3E, F3E, G3E, H3E, J3E or R3E. A non-voice emission is
limited to selective calling or tone-operated squelch tones to establish
or continue voice communications. See 95.181(g) and (h).

(b) [Pertains only to the Radio Control Radio Service.]

(c) [Pertains only to the Citizens Band Radio Service.]

(d) No GMRS or CB transmitter shall employ a digital modulation or
emission.

(e) No GMRS. CB or R/C transmitter shall transmit non-voice data.

Bummer... What we COULD do with digital... Damn Qualcomm.

Has anyone done 1200bps or 9600bps packet on FRS or GMRS? The radios
have MIC and SPEAKER connections.

This would be a cool use for all those 1200bps TNCs gathering dust in
the corner. Heck, you don't even need a TNC - most computers come with
a sound card that should be able to do 1200bps packet. Kids would DIG
being able to use their home computers to send e-mail over their FRS
radios to other kids in their neighborhood. A few folks could set up
some GMRS digipeaters or nodes and link a whole community! A GMRS base
station could be a gateway to the Internet for those that have 24hr
Internet access in their homes. Many possibilities exist here. And it
wouldn't cost hardly anything!

It will really freak the kids out to hear those packet tones on their
FRS radios. Totally cool.

The closest thing I can think of is the TAPR TNC-2 documentation at
ftp://ftp.tapr.org/software_lib/tnc/tncdocs.zip.

The ORIGINAL version of this was copied for the MFJ documentation,
however the only available version was updated around 1992. The prime
differences are the removal of the MF-10 filter, upgrading the SRAM
from 16K to 32K and adding the additional commands in version 1.1.8a
firmware (this is a lot closer to the 1270 than the 1270C would be).
I'm not sure if the MF-10 was in the original 1270 or not (it had been
removed in the 1270B). I suspect that the 1270 had the equivalent of
1.1.3 firmware. The TNC-2 schematics are also available in the same
directory.

Wanted: Documentation on MFJ 1270 (no suffix)
TNC. Already checked the MFJ web site, but only
found the 1270C.

Also wanted - the "stock" or original firmware that
came with the TNC. Or maybe your broken MFJ
model 1270 TNC?

Any help would be appreciated.
