criticism of Brian is beyond unfounded. Further, why did you see fit to
expand the newsgroups line to include .policy and .misc ?

Frankly, I think you're way off-base. Amateurs don't have some magic ticket
to mobile data communications, perhaps you've never seen a Motorola
PageWriter 2000X, or a RIM Blackberry, or an i-mode telephone?

There's a lot more out there than APRS in your hand.

Actually, I wasn't being critical. I was just raising a question.
I expanded newsgroups, because I think it relates to policy, and ham
radio in general. If we can't hook amateur radio into the Internet, we
might as well fold up the tent. If we CAN hook amateur radio into the
Internet, we are in for another GOLDEN AGE OF HAM RADIO.

No, but I HAVE seen a Kenwood TH-D7A:

Now, if they would only drop the price to $249 - the GOLDEN AGE could
begin!!!

Come on now. A laptop going thru a 9.6kbps or 56kbps amateur network
would be MUCH better and cheaper than these "services"(if we could
reach critical mass - which wouldn't be that hard at all). Of course
we would have to limit ourselves to non-commercial websites, e-mail,
and file transfers, and services like APRS - but there COULD be PLENTY
to keep a ham amused, and his peers amazed, and lure more young,
digitally competent people into the ham ranks. Why the heck the ARRL
and TAPR are not putting an effort into supporting something like this,
by gearing there web pages to mobile RF access, is beyond me. We are
missing a GOLDEN opportunity. I suppose most everyone with any
knowledge of digital communications isn't wasting their time with a
non-profit amateur service(even APRS is a mess). These kids can be
making a bundle in the technical industry these days. It is too bad
that most of the retired old hams are too old to learn new tricks -
they could be a valuable resourse to help make this happen - but many
of them seem to be content drooling on their CW sending keys, and
crying about "bitter dregs".
