good points. I was wondering about the same myself. It seems to me that it
will
also depend on the modulation techniques used. From my admittedly weak
understanding
of spread spectrum, it seems like DSSS would be rendered nonfunctional in the
presence of point RF sources and inter-mod. One would probably need a
different technique for operating in high RF density environments.

interesting. I guess if all you are running is DX cluster or
APRS you don't need high-speed or full duplex. I guess we need to
find the magic application set that will turn folks interest
to supporting the networks and participating in their growth.

Subject: Packet (APRS) reception question

Hello all.

I want to set up a recieve-only APRS computer.

I have the scanner, and I have the computer...my question is, do I
need to have a TNC to deciepher the x.25?

The computer has a sound card...anyway to utilize that?

Thanks much.

Does anyone know of any packet activity in the Toronto area? I'm not sure
if I should invest in a TNC for VHF if there's nothing going on around
here :)

Just get yourself a copy of Online or Simpleterm and have at it. Set up
your Palm to run like a VT 100 terminal and its will talk to your kpc 3. It
works for me.

Keep in mind FEC is not a linked mode, and so you're limited to the same
propagation as with RTTY and CW. Are you sure these messages aren't NAVTEX
messages?

Thanks...

Yes, check out the Kenwood TH-D7A, it looks really cool; it is dual
band(2m/70cm), and it has a builtin TNC with 1200/9600bps modems:

Yup, on my Ming Dynasty TR7730, 2m sounds so nice and quiet. Whereas
on my HT's that band is intermod central. When did this 'out of band
receive' thing become a must have anti-feature?

I believe it all started off as a way to facilitate MARS operations.
