Does anyone know if there is a better TNC based node package that Thenet
X1J4? We are having problems with X1J4 locking up.
Must be TNC based.

Yes, but I think it is useless in that application, because to handle the
pacsat protocols you need a computer that has to have reasonable power
(e.g. you probably can't get it to work on a Z-80 CP/M system), and such a
computer can do the required work all by itself.

A PIC driven TNC would be more interesting for small standalone systems,
e.g. remote control & telemetry, APRS, etc.

There has been talk of a KISS "discard frame" escape in some circles.
Since I use Linux on my home systems I have the source and can extend
it if I need to. There is nothing sacred about KISS, and other ways
exist to solve the problem (e.g. 6PACK).

My initial inclination was something quick and dirty for 1200 baud
PACSATs. Then the largest frame I need to handle is 256 bytes, and
if I stick to UI frames (i.e. digipeating and downloads only), I only
need to process one frame at a time. You have to start somewhere... :-)

The 16F8xx PICs are attactive as well for their hardware UARTs. I
ordered
a 16F877 yesterday to see what I can do with it.

As usual, Steve does not know what he is talking about.
Perhaps someday he will put some radios on air and see what
is actually happening with ham radio. Of course APRS is run
at higher speeds than 1200, where there exists such network.
We had a lot of fun running it across our 9600 network for
awhile, until everyone became bored with it.

It's not cheap, but the SCS PTC2e pretty much does everything on HF.

Just about any of the available equipment will work... I'd stay away from
the Kantronics stuff though.

What about it?
