And that is a very sad state of affairs in a *technical hobby*.

It's not a technical hobby anymore. It's a morse code shrine.

A Real HamŽ still uses free air electronics. :-) It only needs to last
through the next QSO and then it needs to be redesigned.

C'mon, be reasonable, Cecil. Those $5 in components aren't the same
as the $80 product (which seems to be priced a little high, IMHO). This
is not about a technical hobby, it is about reliability and aesthetics. If
that
$80 device is well-made, reliable and looks good, then it is probably a
better deal for a lot of people that would rather operate a radio than
tinker with hardware.

Sure, I made a cable to connect a computer sound-card to my FT-847
for about $5, and I even put the PTT-keying transistor inside a DB-25 shell,
so it all looks rather sanitary. I used a molded cable assembly as the basis
of the cable, so maybe I'm not technical :-)

If you would post the circuit diagram here,
then I would know.......

Just fun, keep going!

A Real Ham would have a cigarette lighter in there, and it would be big
enough to put your beer can on as a coaster.
